GLAAD has hired a (*GASP*) Republican as its new President. Neil Giuliano, a "progressive Republican" and former (nonpartisan) mayor of Tempe, Ariz., takes over the helm from Joan Garry on Sept. 1.
Despite reelection in 2000 with 70 percent of the vote, Giuliano survived a recall effort by an anti-gay group (an election that was held on Sept. 11, 2001 -- a seminal day for another mayor who is almost a namesake.)
The move is a good one, and a sign that GLAAD, unlike some organizations, knows how to play the Washington game.
