Here's an idea whose time has come.
(Washington) Pressure is mounting for the repeal of 'don't ask, don't tell', the law which bans gays from serving openly in the military.
A poll conducted by the University of California at Santa Barbara and released Monday shows that only 21 percent of young conservative males who were potential recruits said they would be “less likely” to join the armed forces if the ban were repealed. Two percent of respondents said they were “more likely” to join while the vast majority - 77% - said allowing gays to serve openly would have no impact on their decision to enlist.
Britain has done it. Israel has done it. Canada and Australia like to do it. If our closest military allies haven't a problem with this, we can afford to do a bit of growing up as a nation.
As Andrew Sullivan and others have consistently pointed out, Don't Ask, Don't Tell greatly damages America's capacity to fight the War on Terror.
What have they to fear? Aside from the picture on the right. But that's just hot.
This is just crazy. Why would any self-respecting gay person want to become part of the murdering machinery in the 1st place?
Come on guys! This is one right wing nut job policy that works in our favor; IT GIVES GAYS A PROTECTED STATUS EXEMPTING THEM FROM MILITARY SERVICE!!!
Formerly, not even a Senator's son could be completely exempt.
You can bet your sweet ass if the war in Iraq continues to drag on, and a draft is reinstated, even straight guys will be falling all over each other looking for a way out of military service. Doesn't anybody remember Vietnam anymore?
There's too few gay people as it is, what with a high incidence of gay teen suicide, hate crimes, etc., why let the war hawks turn gays into cannon fodder?
I'm all for equal rights, but when you've been handed a special privelage. Smile and accept it.

It reminds me a bit of comedian Greg Geraldo.
"Gays can't get married. They can't serve in the military. Hell, you throw in no jury duty and I'll start blowing guys tomorrow."

Bro? Tie dye?
Interesting approach to commentary, simply attack the commentator rather than reply with a thoughtful rebuttal!
Take your debate class with Rush Limbaugh did you?
Being exempted from military service is alot like the whole issue of marriage for gays. It's a friggin' silver lined special rights arrangement if you shift your perspective.
My ex could've taken me to the cleaners for lots of money, instead, I just walked away...no costly divorce, no alimony, no his getting his grubby little thieving hands on my retirement.
Hey man, when you can't see how good you actually have it, then you deserve to be blind.
Gays may not have 'equal rights', but get real, who actually does in this animal farm of a country? On those two issues, gays enjoy special rights, if they'd only look at things closely enough they might stop trying to throw them away.
