Wow, I actually just got a little misty at Robbie's Thanksgiving post. Thanks, man. (I will be sure to pull that one out to respond to the next "fan" telling me what a louse I am!)
I didn't plant as many holiday "time bombs" as Robbie implied. In fact, the only one I was able to complete ("Targeting Target") already detonated at around 1 a.m. on Thursday. This blogging thing is a harsh mistress, I tells ya'.
I started writing this on Thanksgiving Day as we were headed east on Long Island (quite literally, blog "rolling") on the Hampton Jitney. I wasn't able to finish before we pulled into Southampton, so I am finishing now as we head back west. This is their "Ambassador" line, which means you get the same crummy Otis Spunkmeyer muffin and WiFi, but a little more legroom. (UPDATE: We just got a complementary glass of wine. Huzzah!)
There were only a couple of celebrity sightings to report this weekend. First we saw the fashion designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka at the restuaurant James on Main in Southampton. Honestly, I wouldn't have known them from Bartles and Jaymes if my husband weren't such a clotheshorse. I'd share the picture I tried to take of them if it weren't such a joke. But at least I think I discovered a better camera setting for clandestine, no-flash photos.
The fact is, I am becoming something of an expert at taking bad pictures of famous people. See, when I encounter celebrities, I want to take their picture, but I don't want them to know that I am taking their picture. So when I stand behind Alec Baldwin and his Asian girlfriend in line at the Starbucks in East Hampton like I did today, the result is something like the picture I took of them at the "fixins" station:
We went and saw "Rent" (the movie) on Wednesday night. I'm a little baffled by the critics' rather ho-hum reaction to it. I am no "Renthead," by any stretch. I have seen it on Broadway a total of once, and to be honest, while I liked most of the music quite a lot (I bought the theatre and movie soundtracks), I found the show itself to be, frankly, a bit of a mess. I'm forgiving, though, because I think some of its excesses would have been curbed, had it not been for Jonathan Larson's untimely death. (That death, ironically, undoubtedly added to "Rent's" mystique and grosses.)
I think a lot of people had it in (or is it "out"?) for Chris Columbus since the start. Obviously, the director of kiddie fare such as "Home Alone" and effects-laden blockbusters like "Harry Potter" couldn't possibly "get" the grit and pathos of life during the darkest days of AIDS on the Lower East Side.
Yet, while I had quibbles with a few of his choices, he did a perfectly serviceable job with the material, and some of the performances were indeed terrific. (Rosario Dawson and Wilson Jermaine Heredia, who won a Tony for originating the role of "Angel," come easily to mind.)
But I am baffled by some of the critics who took issue with the source material, going all the way back to Puccini's "La Boheme."
Much of what I felt made "Rent" the musical hard to sit through, such as some of the sung recitative passages, was rectified in "Rent" the movie. Overall, while the premise feels a bit dated and creaky, "Rent" is still ultimately about life, love and friendship. On that score, it solidly connects – and you don't even have to be a Renthead to realize that.
I thought it was great. On the otherhand, I AM a bit of a RENThead. I've seen it on stage 3 times and know absolutely every word and melody note (and much of the harmony) by heart.
I thought the movie was well put together though. Ironically, it was the absence of the recitative segments that grated my nerves a bit. I got used to it but I think there was a bit of discord between the spoken words coming through the speakers and the meoldies that were blaring inside my own head.

Just getting in from seeing it myself and was quite moved by it. I can see why it has such strong appeal--it takes the author's situation (Manhattan in the 1990s) and draws from it universal themes. I've seen the opera several times, love the music, but the movie touched me, moved me, in ways the opera never did.
I'm buying the soundtrack.

You should post the picture of Mark Badgley and James Mischka even if you think it is bad :-)

Really, now. Can you tell that the figure circled here in red is James Mischka? (Mark Badgley was hidden by the shadowy figure on the left.)
If so, then maybe I should have posted it originally. :-)

Hehehe! Perhaps you were right not to post it in the first place :-X

My wife and I are looking to relocate to Jersey, to be somewhat close to NYC. We like Perth Amboy and Red Bank. Problem is, right now we live in Minnesota and it is hard to search for a job in NJ living here. But how in the world can we rent an apartment in New Jersey when we will be unemployed at first?
