Thank you for sending this link to KnowThyNeighbor.org. Though I am not surprised at this, I may be able to shed some light. Darrell Crate, the Chairman of the Massachusetts GOP State Committee is or was one of the chairs of Bates' Endowment Fund. Crate for lack of better words, Romney's Butt Boy, was the one responsible for going door to door at the Mass Statehouse a couple of years back during our ConCons, asking legislators to vote for the worst of the constitutional amendments to end gay marriage. More recently, Crate and his cronies within the GOP state committee took it upon themselves to "sign up" GOP state committee volunteers to assist in collecting signatures for "The Amendment to Define Marriage" the ballot petition which would end same sex marriage in 2008 if voted for (it was sponsored by the Massachusetts Family Institute and VoteOnMarriage.org). What is even more appauling about Crate's and the GOP's involvement in the signature collecting is that they said they only did it to "ID" voters and it has nothing to do with gay marriage, as a matter of fact, the subject of gay marriage "never comes up." About two months ago, Crate appointed the political director of this anti-gay organization VoteOnMarriage.org's, Rob Willington, as the Mass GOP's new political director. Willington referred to gays as "the forces of evil" on his former organization's website.
So what to do about this? Look to other "illustrious" Bates College Alumnae and lodge complaints IMMEDIATELY! We can all start with the Reverend Peter J. Gomes, Harvard's openly gay, never afraid to speak out for what is right minister of Memorial Church. Reverend Gomes is a Bates Alum.
