Queerty digs up a reason why you might not want to support Mandisa. Damn. I used to love that BBW.
Meanwhile, GayPatriot is on the same page with us about where "Idol" seems headed. The husband and I were sitting on the sofa last night critiquing each contestant, as per usual, and we could predict virtually every word that was spoken by Simon Cowell, the only truly honest judge. The song choices were baffling, the performances were shockingly bad, and even the potential winners are starting to look like losers.
My bottom three tonight: Lisa Tucker, Ace, and Kellie Pickler (although I think America will choose Bucky).
You hit the nail on the head. I haven't watched Idol this year until last night's final 10, and what a sad state of affairs for that show. And certainly happy to hear Simon tell them the truth about just how bad their selections were. Go figure. But once again I seem to be hooked and will surely watch tonight's show.
p.s. love your site. just discovered it today, and will be checking in daily.

Welcome, Dirk!

According the AOL poll, the bottom four from most votes to least are Ace, Paris, Bucky, Lisa.
I'd probably switch Ace and Paris in that for my bottom three.

Wow. Was that AI I was watching? Chris isn't ready for prime time but Shakira was. I don't know, Dog.
Posted by: Jerry | March 29, 2006 at 09:14 PM
Wow, how is this bottom two happening.
Posted by: Robbie | March 29, 2006 at 09:26 PM
not enough black women in the bottom two for ya?
Posted by: louis | March 29, 2006 at 10:40 PM
ABK. Anyone but Katharine!
I think this week was one of those incidents where the audience assumes someone is safe, so they throw their votes to contestants they like who may be struggling a bit more to stay afloat.

You know...I don't care if she does support anti-gay ministries. Have we forgotten that people are free to believe what ever the hell they want to? So what she sung a "Praise Christ" song. If that's what she wants to do, then sobeit. I'm so tired of the bigotry that goes on the gay community. (Not pointing finger at Mal or Robbie, however, merely using this as a soap-box!) I say good for her for being so strong in her beliefs, even though I may not subscribe to them. I'm glad I didn't go see Dan Renzi's stupid play in Austin, and I'm even more glad I was a dick to him in a bar! *venting complete*

Louis, sell your racist conspiracy theories elsewhere. I don't have the patience tonight.
Posted by: Malcontent | March 30, 2006 at 12:17 AM
Zack, if you can't find fault in her "heroes," then I'd question your judgment.
Posted by: Malcontent | March 30, 2006 at 12:18 AM
....Yes and too, while we're venting and all, I would personally just like to express that what little homophobic eveidence that I guess you believe you've presented here Mal, with respect to Mandissa, is hardly a reason to try your hand at marginalizing and alienating yet another assertive black woman; which seems to take place rather consistently aboard this site thanks to a few.
Sheesh, Oprah, Whitney, Star and now poor...big Mandissa.
Posted by: louis | March 30, 2006 at 12:30 AM
Didn't mean to hit a nerve...or hell maybe my intent was meaningful. However, it's pitiful, if not a bit telling, that I was allowed to hit a nerve so easily....sorry.

Louis, give me a fucking break. Criticizing any black person is racist?!
I challenge you to prove any racist overtones to anything we say about minorities beyond criticism or teasing that we don't also hand out equally to Caucasians. Get a life.
If you hadn't noticed, this site is called "The Malcontent." Like many gay sites, it dishes out snark to everyone who is deserving of it. Plenty of gay blogs of a more "leftist" persuasion are even more vicious to the people you named. I hope you'll link us to your comments where you take them to task. Loser.
To me, it seems racist and paternalizing to suggest that minorities are so fragile that they are undeserving of the same scrutiny as everyone else. Just keep that perpetual grievance industry a-chuggin' along ...
Posted by: Malcontent | March 30, 2006 at 12:40 AM
Mal, you've had a long day man. Please get some rest. As much of a loser as I concede to being, simple name calling is unbecoming to a gentleman of your intellectual prowess.
good night

whoah ! ... wait a minute .. how did we suddenly end up in a worse version of 'crash' ?? how did this become a black thang ?
lisa deserved to go .. and frankly, so did ace and katherine .. although i'd miss ace for obvious reasons.
if the "issue" has somehow become mandisa's jesus number .. it wasn't JUST that it was a jesus number, it was a CRAPPY jesus number. didn't know about the alleged anti-gay stuff though, in which case fuck her .. but not because she's BLACK. don't have a clue where that's coming from.

Quote: "So what she sung a "Praise Christ" song."
It's not about singing a Christian gospel song. Not at all.
It's about Mandisa calling a bigot like Beth Moore her "personal American Idol".
Some bits from Moore's website:
About what to do if a friend comes out to you:
"Let your friend know you hurt with him, not because of him. Express anger toward the deception in homosexuality."
About what to do if your son comes to you and tells you he's gay:
"Assure Cory that change is certainly possible. Many of my clients have successfully turned from a gay lifestyle..."
And even Mandisa's own song opening statement of "Your addiction, lifestyle, or situation may be big, but God is bigger!" would lead one to believe that possibly she, too, shared her disgusting idol's belief that homosexuality can be "overcome" or "cured".
THAT is the problem.

Or that she has "overcome" or been "cured."
In my three years and about $18-20,000 of reparative therapy Nicolosi never promised a "cure" just a "change." Isn't that convenient? These people are not evil, just misguided. Maybe this gal thinks she's "doing the Lord's work." This doesn't excuse ignorance, but maybe it might be a mitigating factor.

Oh, and Louis, you might feel a certain affinity for big black women, but just to be clear, You are not a strong black woman.
Posted by: Patrick | March 30, 2006 at 02:26 AM
amen, jeff ! i just re-read zack's comment charging bigotry for not "allowing people to believe whatever the hell they want" if you are so-called "anti-gay" it's not like you are saying that you don't like ace or reality tv shows or someone's religious afiliation or politics or rainy days, you are attempting to deny the very essence of my being and that's just hateful, ignorant bullshit. that kind of overt bigotry does not have to be accepted as just another 'belief'
Posted by: el polacko | March 30, 2006 at 02:39 AM
Don't project your issues onto me, Louis. I wrote about anti-gay religious bigotry, and even stated how much I had previously loved Mandisa, and viewed through the warped little prism of your mind, you decided to call me a racist, in so many words.
Which makes you ... a loser.
Posted by: Malcontent | March 30, 2006 at 08:08 AM
Still with the epithets? Perhaps you're projecting your issues onto me in-kind?
Posted by: louis | March 30, 2006 at 09:44 AM
Please, Mandisa had me at "lifestyle". As soon as she pricked my ears with that word, I stopped in my tracks. If she wants to learn a thing or two about this "big" and "bigness" she has heaped upon us, she should take a look in a mirror. Now that's what I call big. Her thighs last night were outrageous!
Don't get me wrong. I don't have any problems with people. Whatever your size, color- I could care less. But when you get on a soap box, and you start judging me, it's on! Call a spade a spade!
I was really hoping that she would be the one to go tonight and I will be rooting for her downfall, including her career. Hopefully she'll be stuck singing Gospel for the rest of her life, which is virtual banishment from my world. Now that would be freedom. Praise Him!
Posted by: Patrick | March 30, 2006 at 09:50 AM
Call a spade a spade. That was a very, Robbie-esque like dig.
Posted by: louis | March 30, 2006 at 09:59 AM
OMG- seriously, that's insulting. That dig, a play that worked on multiple levels, is hilarious, and would only offend those who have no sense of humor at all (and thereby OK to offend, because they need to lighten up), was far superior to anything Robbie could come up with.
Posted by: Patrick | March 30, 2006 at 10:12 AM
....yet just as thinly veiled
