The Ladies of Llangollen — writers Eleanor Butler (1739-1829) and Sarah Ponsonby (1755 -1831) —celebrated joint birthdays and shared their lives for a half century.
1934 - A severe two-day dust storm stripped the topsoil from the great plains of the U.S. and created a "Dust Bowl." The storm was one of many.
1982 - Voters in Lincoln, Nebraska, rejected a gay rights ordinance 78%-22%. Paul Cameron led the fight, spreading lies and warped research. He would soon be kicked out of the American Psychological Association and placed under investigation by the American Sociological Association for unethical conduct.
1984 - The United Methodist Church voted to bar homosexuals from ordination.
1987 - The Washington Post published "The Cautious Closet of the Gay Conservative." The article focused mainly on Terry Dolan who, until his death from AIDS in December 1986, was vehemently anti-gay.
1988 - Anti-gay televangelist Pat Robertson withdrew from the race for President of the United States.
1990 - Longtime Companion opened in New York City. It was the first major studio release to deal with AIDS.
1996 - An Atlanta-bound ValuJet DC-9 caught fire shortly after takeoff from Miami and crashed into the Florida Everglades. All 110 people on board were killed.
1998 - Mayor Rudolph Giuliani (R-NYC) proposed legislation which would grant same-sex domestic partners the same rights to which married couples are entitled.
2000 - 190 people were arrested at a meeting of United Methodist bishops during an act of civil disobedience organized by Soulforce
2000 - William Dale Jennings, co-founder of the ONE Gay and Lesbian History Archives, died of repiratory failure at age 82. Born on this day:

I got a job offer from ValuJet just before this crash happened. I filled out the paperwork, the whole schmeel. Miami-Atlanta was going to be my primary route.
I took another job that came through the day before I was supposed to start training. Spooky.
