1895 - Playwright, poet and novelist Oscar Wilde is convicted of "committing acts of gross indecency with other male persons" and sentenced to serve two years in prison.
1913 - Colonel Alfred Redl, former chief of Austrian counterintelligence, committed suicide when it became known that he had been blackmailed, on account of his homosexuality, into working for Russia for the previous year. Later in the century the Redl affair would be cited by U.S. senators as evidence of the security risk homosexuals pose.
