1824 - Beethoven's 9th Symphony premiered in Vienna.
1915 - The British ocean liner Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine in World War I off the coast of Ireland.
1940 - Winston Churchill became British Prime Minister.
1945 - Germany unconditionally surrendered to the allies in Rheims, France.
1954 - The Florida Supreme Court upheld a sodomy conviction by a vote of 5-2 in the case of McElveen et al. v. State.
1973 - Gay youth activist Mark Segal interrupted a taping of the Mike Douglas Show, which had recently cancelled two appearances with Rev. Troy Perry, founder of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. It was his second arrest.
1978 - The Austin (TX) Human Rights Commission sponsored a Human Rights Festival at Municipal Auditorium to protest an appearance by Anita Bryant in Austin. Over 1,000 people attended.
1992 - The 27th Amendment to the Constitution, prohibiting mid-term Congressional pay raises, was ratified.
1993 - The Hawaii Supreme Court rules that the state must prove a "compelling interest" for denying same-sex Partners a marriage license.
1994 - Edvard Munch's painting, The Scream was recovered a few months after it had been stolen.
1996 - The Boulder Colorado city council voted unanimously to approve a domestic partner registry.
1999 - The jury in the "Jenny Jones" civil suit awarded the family of slain talk show guest Scott Amedure $25 million. Amedure was murdered after revealing his crush on another man on the show.
1999 - NATO jets bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, killing three and injuring 20. Born on this day:
