Holding Out for a Hero

The new issue of The Advocate has a focus on the gays' fixation on superheroes, which should mean many a queer dollar spent this summer to see Superman Returns and X-Men: Final Stand.

Brandon's fabled bulge notwithstanding, I was especially curious to see that Ben Foster would be playing "The Angel," a winged mutant who looks like he just dragged his ass in from the White Party.

Foster, as you may recall, played Claire's bisexual boyfriend Russell on several episodes of "Six Feet Under."  But as you will see in the photo, could it be that sensitive, little artist Russell is – of all things – fuckin' ripped?

The flick also features Kelsey Grammer as a character known as "The Beast."

I can just see a blue, ultra-effete mutant, and how menacing he will really be: "Niles, I'm going to disembowel you!"

Bedeviled Advocate (I Know, I Used a Similar Headline Before)

Why am I so amused that the "privacy policy" link on LPI Media's FAQ page for its own magazine, The Advocate, mistakenly directs readers to The Advocate, a daily newspaper in Baton Rouge, La. (and to a broken link, actually)?

Maybe I amuse too easily.

Gratuitousness

I know we have been a bit skin-deficient around here lately, at least, as far as political blogs go.  Let's face it, we're no Made In Brazil, Oh La La Paris or Fleshbot.  Hell, we'd even make a piss-poor Rod 2.0.

But I just had to share a spread from the May issue of Out magazine.

Look, I don't know who this Yves Saint Laurent person is, and I don't much care.  And I couldn't tell his summer collection from a stamp collection.

All I know is, I'm all for fashion that consists of, well, pretty much no clothing whatsoever.

I'm serious.  Can someone explain this to me?

Damn, That Whiny Bastard Can Screw!

A study out of (the unbiased, I'm sure) UC Berkeley found that "whiny kids tended to grow up conservative, and turned into rigid young adults who hewed closely to traditional gender roles and were uncomfortable with ambiguity," while "confident kids turned out liberal and were still hanging loose, turning into bright, non-conforming adults with wide interests."

Meanwhile, GQ is reporting that "after numerous years of intensive research on both sides of the aisle—and sometimes in the aisle—I am here to report that Republican men (except the closet cases) are infinitely better to have sex with."

Sex columnist Dan Savage this week essentially agreed, writing: "People's political leanings, competence, and command of the English language tell us very little about their private sexual conduct. Indeed, one study in the mid '90s found that conservatives were, on average, kinkier than liberals."

We're assuming that liberals who want a good lay travel with a bag to put on their partner's head.

Low-Carb Eye Candy

Ever wonder how the hottest Hollywood stars manage to keep their bodies in top form – aside from having jobs that are more or less all about how they look?

VH1 and Self magazine are collaborating on a new series called "Most Wanted Bodies," giving us the inside dirt on how to get and keep a leading-man look.  (I always thought it was genetics, but apparently there's, like, hard work and stuff involved.)

There were far too many women in the most recent episode for my liking, so we are left with just LL Cool J, Nick Lachey and Matthew McConaghey for these highlights.

Whom does VH1 think is watching their network, anyway – straight men?

Bazaar, Indeed

Is Madonna still promoting "Confessions on a Dancefloor," or just in some strange limbo between it and whatever her next big project is?  Well, the flyaway bangs are gone ...

Michelangel-oh!

The famous Florentine Michelangelo, for whom the term "Renaissance Man" practically could have been invented, was infatuated with painting and sculpting the male form.  But as we now know, he loved to do other things to them too.

He liked to write poems about them.  (What did you think I meant?)

On Thursday, a new exhibit of Michelangelo's drawings taken from virtually his entire career opens at the British Museum in London.

So the timing was right for the UK's superb Gay Times magazine to run a spread of photos inspired by some of those 500-year-old images, courtesy of male model "Petr."

He seems a little "softer" than what we're used to in American magazines.  But to me, that only adds to the sexiness.  Or maybe I was just in shock from seeing Gay Times in Germany surrounded by several other mainstream publications with naked ladies on the cover.

Now If We Could Just Fit Details With a Plethysmograph

Queer Beacon writes that the new issue of Details is dredging up a 10-year-old study connecting homophobia with latent homosexuality by measuring penile responses to gay porn.

It's not enough that Details is the gayest magazine on the planet; now they're actively recruiting self-professed hets.

Why do I care, beyond losing a vast source of programming for MalcoVision to make fun of?

Film-Flam

This just in from our Bangalore suboffice: The Advocate and Out are now your go-to place for awards news on gay-themed films, including (ahem) "that movie."

Stop Drinking the Haterade, Yo

Business in the gay media today is starting to look like some big Eros-drenched orgy.

First PlanetOut got gay-married to LPI (parent company of magazines such as The Advocate), and now The Advocate is bumping uglies with the Logo cable channel (which itself has many incestuous ties to its sister networks including MTV, VH1, CBS, and BET) with a new joint production.

The first episode of "The Advocate Newsmagazine" on Logo seems patterned after that other CBS staple, "60 Minutes."  (Please, no jokes about whether the Logo version should be redubbed "69 Minutes.")

Drawing heavily on the resources of MTV News, rather than the fledgling CBS News on Logo, the show had long-form and well-produced segments on "Don't Ask Don't Tell," Sheryl Swoopes, Robert Trachtenberg's book "When I Knew," and the subject of this edition of MalcoVision, "Homophobia and Hip Hop."

The segment took as its starting point Kanye West's famous August 2005 MTV interview in which he condemned homophobia.  (Of course, my goodwill toward Kanye lasted two weeks until his fatuous post-Katrina comments about George Bush.)

While the piece makes clear that there are some individuals who are trying to make positive change within hip-hop, they fighting a swift current.  Even Kanye West himself hasn't been in a hurry to stand by his gay-friendly remarks.

Instead, what we see in general terms is a culture of denial and indifference, and far too often, outright hostility to gays.

You know that ad you might have seen for The Malcontent?  The one that says "Nothin' Dirty Goin' On"?

Yeah, well, we lied about that.

The new DNA magazine came special delivery today.  It was chock full of guys mud-rasslin' in their underwear and carryin' on generally.

I'm sure there was also hootin' and hollerin' involved, as well as other truncated gerunds.

Don't worry, admirers of the male form.  I won't let the detractors stand in the way of your enjoyment.

Me, I always love to see the new issue of DNA magazine in my mailbox.

It's getting cold up north, but things are just starting to heat up Down Under.  Come to think of it, it's always summer at DNA – whose models are so gorgeous it might just as well stand for "Don't Need Airbrushing."

Coverboy Rusty Joiner (who himself comes from "down under" the Mason-Dixon line in Georgia) is in fine fettle this month, showing off even more than than this barely clad photo on the inside pages.
